Tennessee Vols Athletic Director John Currie has suffered extreme backlash and scrutiny with the announcement of leading Head Coach candidate Greg Schiano.

The University of Tennessee has since backed out due to the wide spread outrage on Social Media and protests on Campus.  Schiano was an assistant at Penn State during the Sandusky era where Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse.

John Currie was hired as the Athletic Director at UT February 28, 2017.  In his 8 month tenure, Currie has not had the time to earn the loyalty of fans and has quite the controversy early in his administration.

Social Media has been the gasoline to many small issues in the past that can cause severe damage to people and their careers.  As Currie issued an official statement, we wanted to take a look at the facts around this issue and ask some key questions.

Currie issued the following statement:

“We carefully interviewed and vetted Schiano, as we do candidates for all positions. He received the highest recommendations for character, family values and commitment to academic achievement and student-athlete welfare from his current and former athletics directors, players, coaching colleagues and experienced media figures.”

The first and obvious question is: Should every coach that ever worked with Sandusky be guilty due to association?

The Sandusky investigation was deep and thorough yet Schiano was never mentioned.  While opinions may vary on this question, it will always be a factor for all of those coaches.

The second question is John Currie being judge harshly because he is new to the University?

While we can not speak for him, we think it is safe to say he would not condone the actions of Sandusky yet it seems to be what Social Media portrays.  His statement above makes his efforts clear.  He was looking to find the best coach he could to help the Vols win.  He was going off the Coaches record, supporting staff comments, and other athletic directors evaluations.

It is likely the Sandusky incident never entered his mind.

The final question is simple: Is Greg Schiano a good Candidate for the Head Coaching position in Knoxville?

We can answer this one: Thats a big NO.

The Head Coaching position at Tennessee is in the top 15 in all of College Football.  This means, including the NFL,  The Vols next Head Coach should be  the Top 47 in the world.

When you are a Top program, you do not need a diamond in the rough,  You get to go out and pick a big gem if you are willing to pay for it.
