Butch Jones has found himself under the microscope this season as the Vols continue to fall in the division standings. Did Butch Jones Seal His Fate With South Carolina Loss?

The Vols post a 3-3 record after the first six games of the year.  More concerning is the teams they will face the rest of the year leaving many to ask how bad will this get.

Experts predict the Tennessee Volunteers to win just two of the remianing six games.  This would give them a 5-7 record for 2017, the worst in 5 years.  This would equal Butch Jones first year as head coach and the two years prior under coach Derek Dooley.

So what causes a team that has improved each year to take a turn for the worst? There can only be two answers to that question.

The first and most obvious is recruitment.  The head coach is responsible for evaluating high school players and then “selling” them on their school.  But the Vols have some talented players.

The second would be coaching staff issues.  This is a direct reflection on Jones as he controls which coaches work under him.  The offensive play calling and defensive preparation are calls for concern to say the least.

One could go on all day dissecting the play calling for the Vols but ultimately its a leadership issue.  The Vols seem to lack commitment which is a direct reflection of the head coach.

A head coaches job is to plan, orchestrate, and inspire the team week to week.  The clearest issue every Saturday is an uninspired team.

Now we will be the first to say that players failure to execute is not always the head coaches fault.  However, after a 5-7 season, someone has to be axed.  Its the nature of the job.

The answer to the question is no secret.  Monday morning after the loss to South Carolina, the Athletic Director started looking for a replacement coach almost certainly. Not that the decision has been made to fire Jones at the end of the year just yet.  Just knowing its a 90% probability.

In a press conference after the game Saturday, Jones stated the upcoming Alabama game was an opportunity.  Our interpretation was this was his only shot at keeping his job.  If a miracle pulled through and the Vols defeated the Tide, Jones could possibly keep his job next year.

The odds of this happening are near zero but its the only chance he’s got.
