The Tennessee Titans introduce Mike Vrabel today as the organizations new Head Coach. The hiring of Mike Vrabel over all the other candidates with better resumes has left many fans scratching their heads.

Mike Vrabel has several good qualities.  He has an excellent reputation through out the league, is known for a great leadership quality, and knows what it takes to win Super Bowls.

That being said, the Titans Head Coaching position would be considered the best available in the NFL by most.  It is rare a Head Coach gets released after going to the Divisional playoff round.

This creates a situation where an elite coordinator can step into a “ready made” team and be deep in the play offs the first year.

The Tennessee Titans defense surprised the entire league in 2017 and was ultimately the strength of the team.  Offensively, the team under preformed falling well short of all preseason projection.

The top Coordinators in the league are obviously still in the play offs.  The rule is, General Managers can not contact them until their run is over. However, this doesn’t create much of an issue as Coaches typically take off once the season has completed.

So why Vrabel and why so quickly?  There was not a team in the league courting him for an HC position, so what was the rush?

The issue is Vrabel is purely a defensive coach yet the Titans have what the league considers to be one of the best defensive minds in football. Now many will say, “if he gets a good Offensive Coordinator it could be good.”

This is true but proven, successful Offensive Coordinators do not move laterally.  They stay where they are until they are offered an HC spot.

Not only have the Titans missed out on a top offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, but allowed him to enter their division on another team.  The AFC South will almost certainly be among the toughest in 2018.

The final verdict is Vrabel would be a great fit for a team that did not make it to the playoffs and was looking to focus on defense.  For the Titans, its a gamble on a Rookie HC that will promote the best quarterbacks coach to Offensive Coordinator.

Marcus Mariota is a rare talent and he will spend the best five years of his career on a boom or bust situation.

As much as we make like Vrabel, this doesn’t look like a good decision with many expecting AFC Championship in 2018. Had the Titans waited a couple weeks, any top OC should have the Titans on top of the list if Tennessee were ready to pay.  This will ultimately be a make or break situation for GM Jon Robinson.
